My name is Dean Hills. I’m an enthusiastic VPS owner and as such this blog is about my VPS experiences and participation in VPS post to host forums.
I’ve experienced many ups and downs on the supply side of VPSs and have learned that “free” VPSs don’t necessarily have a long life and “paid” cheap VPSs can be equally vulnerable for expiry. So I have learned to be resilient with setting up a VPS in the shortest possible time and to back up and migrate my WordPress Websites with the greatest speed and the least amount of effort.
My source of VPS used to be very ample on the free side until the availability of free VPSs got less and less. I used to be able to get free VPSs with enormous specs through post for host discussion forums with the added benefits of learning much about how to manage a VPS as well as share experiences with specialists. Until last year I was an Admin at post4vps.com and had the use of a super spec VPS for many years. I also had use of free VPSs from freevps.club, limitlessrpg.com and FreeVPS.us, however all of these Forum have expired quite a while ago. I owe them all a deep gratitude for being able to learn so much from VPS specialists, as well as to keep in touch with new technology and check on availability of free or cheap VPSs.
Fortunately I always maintained a paid VPS with HostUS.us that I acquired during 2016 so had a very reliable backup to rely upon. My paid VPS is at the low end of specs, whereas my free VPS used to come with enormous specs, however that doesn’t make my paid VPS less reliable and shabby in performance. Hostus.us is exceptional for having been around for so many years, and still providing high end quality at very low rates. My paid VPS has a location in London, and speed is lightning fast and overall performance and support of the VPS excellent.
I’ve taught myself to set up a VPS in minutes with VestaCP and you’ll find many articles in this blog about my VestaCP learning experiences. VestaCP is a free panel with a combo of nginx and apache. What is great about it and makes it perfect for a small VPS is that it is a very light panel using very little resources. It is also very fast because of nginx. Unfortunately the main script with VestaCP is no longer actively updated and has become useless, but fortunately some of the previous admin of VestaCP have developed forks of the script. I’m currently using the MyVestaCP fork for Debian that has been developed and is being actively updated and maintained by dpeca. For the speedy migration of WordPress websites I use the All-in-One WP Migration Plugin.
